Welded Stool
I made this stool for a methods, materials, and structures class. I watched welding videos to learn the basics of the machines I would use and was taught by my professor. After practicing tig and stick welding, I decided I would prefer stick welding. This stool is made up of two pieces of steel piping that is two feet long and six pieces of steel piping that is one foot long.
Since the pipe was originally ten feet long, I had to mark out the length of each piece I needed and then cut them using a band saw. I had to be very precise since this pipe was the exact length needed for the eight pieces.
Since this was my first time ever welding, I wanted to make sure I was completely comfortable with welding before getting started on my cut pieces. So, I practiced multiple times on scrap pieces of steel until I got a good feel of what it was like and was comfortable.
Once I knew I was comfortable and use to the feel of stick welding, I knew I was good to go and began welding my pieces together to build the stool.
When the welds were all completed, I added a piece of 5/8 particle wood as the seat by using self drilling lath screws to hold it into the steel. I plan on adding a cushion on top of the wood with foam and fabric to add comfort and style.
There were some difficulties I ran into like the stick getting stuck to my pieces but I was able to push through and finish my stool. Even though my welds may not look very good, they hold the pieces together well and I am still proud of myself for learning a new type of metalworking.
